House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has vetoed two Republican nominees to the panel set to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Citing “statements and actions” made by the pair — Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio, Pelosi said she was rejecting their nominations “with respect for the integrity of the investigation.”

“The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision,” Pelosi said.

The two lawmakers were among five that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy nominated to the committee. One other GOP member, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, was named to the panel by Pelosi.

Pelosi said she would accept McCarthy’s other nominees: Reps. Rodney Davis of Illinois, Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota and Troy Nehls of Texas.

Banks, Jordan and Nehls voted against certifying the election, the proceedings that the rioters disrupted.

McCarthy called Pelosi’s move “an egregious abuse of power and will irreparably damage this institution.”

“Denying the voices of members who have served in the military and law enforcement, as well as leaders of standing committees, has made it undeniable that this panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility and shows the Speaker is more interested in playing politics than seeking the truth,” he said in a statement. “Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts.”

Attempts to establish a bipartisan panel to look into the storming of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob have been marked by partisan squabbling. Senate Republicans blocked an attempt to name an independent commission, which led to a party-line vote to create a select committee.

Pelosi said she spoke to McCarthy Tuesday morning about the impact Banks’ and Jordan’s appointments “may have on the integrity of the investigation.”

The Democratic members of the panel are: Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the panel’s chair; Reps. Zoe Lofgren of California, Adam Schiff of California, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Pete Aguilar of California, Stephanie Murphy of Florida and Elaine Luria of Virginia.

The panel is expected to hold its first hearing next week.

Pelosi hints on adding GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger to the selected Jan. 6 committee

“I mean, there are some members that would like to be on it,” Pelosi added.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is considering naming GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger to join the selected committee investigating the deadly January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. During a news conference on Capitol Hill on Thursday morning, Pelosi said, “We’ll see,” when asked about the potential appointment.”I mean, there are some members that would like to be on it,” Pelosi added. “But, we’ll see.”

Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat who’s been appointed chairman of the new committee, said Thursday that adding Kinzinger to the panel has been discussed with the speaker. Thompson said if Pelosi signs off, Kinzinger will be a “welcome addition.”

Kinzinger, a vocal Republican critic of former President Donald Trump and who was one of 10 GOP House members to vote for his second impeachment, would join Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as the only Republicans on the new select committee. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled his five GOP members from the panel, after Pelosi rejected two of McCarthy’s five choices — Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio.

Kinzinger refused to comment about his potential appointment to the panel on Thursday morning. The committee is scheduled to hold its first hearing next week.

McCarthy threatens to boycott House Jan. 6 committee after Pelosi rejects two of his GOP picks

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said in response that Republicans will not participate in the investigation unless Pelosi changes her mind.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) on Wednesday rejected two Republicans picked by GOP leadership to serve on the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said in response that Republicans will not participate in the investigation unless Pelosi changes her mind.

House rules give the speaker final say over committee assignments, but the speaker normally defers to the minority leader’s choices of committee members to represent the minority party.

Pelosi acknowledged that her decision is unprecedented in a statement Wednesday. But she said past statements by two of McCarthy’s five picks — Rep. Jim Banks (R-N.J.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) — raised concerns about their ability to take part in the probe.

“With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these members, I must reject the recommendations of Reps. Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee,” Pelosi said.

Banks was tapped by McCarthy to serve as the ranking Republican on the committee.

McCarthy has repeatedly turned to Jordan to defend former President Trump during investigations led by Democrats. Both challenged certification of President Biden’s electoral wins.

“This represents an egregious abuse of power and will irreparably damage this institution,” McCarthy said in a statement. “Denying the voices of members who have served in the military and law enforcement, as well as leaders of standing committees, has made it undeniable that this panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility and shows the speaker is more interested in playing politics than seeking the truth.”

“Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts,” he said.

The committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting July 27. Under the rules, it would have enough members to make a quorum and proceed even if none of McCarthy’s picks served.

Pelosi said she is willing to accept McCarthy’s three other choices.

“I also informed him that I was prepared to appoint Reps. Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong and Troy Nehls, and requested that he recommend two other members,” she said.

The select committee was created to investigate the security failures that led to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, which occurred while Congress was certifying the 2020 presidential election results, as required by the Constitution.

After the Senate was unable to create an independent, nonpartisan commission to study what led to the attack, the House moved to create its own committee.

In the hours-long melee, thousands of people attacked police, broke windows and forced their way into the Capitol building, delaying the certification and causing Vice President Mike Pence and hundreds of lawmakers to flee to safe rooms.

Five people died during and shortly after the attack, and two police officers died by suicide in the days following the violence. At least 140 officers were injured, some permanently.

More than 500 people have been arrested on charges including conspiracy and unlawful entry.

Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson will lead the committee.

Also serving are California Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose), Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and Pete Aguilar (D-Redlands), as well as Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Elaine Luria (D-Va.).

Democrats might subpoena Trump & Ivanka Before House Jan. 6 Committee

“If the facts themselves lead us to any individual, we will not hesitate to bring them before the committee”

Former President Donald Trump could be called to testify before the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, The Guardian reported Wednesday.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., told The Guardian he would issue subpoenas to some senior members of the previous administration and would pursue subpoenas in court if necessary.

“Nothing is off limits,” Thompson told The Guardian.

On the question of issuing a subpoena to Trump, Thompson told PBS on July 6 that “we have the subpoena authority.”

“If the facts themselves lead us to any individual, we will not hesitate to bring them before the committee,” he told PBS.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., created the committee to probe the events surrounding the Jan. 6 assault, in which demonstrators protesting the November election results stormed the Capitol.

The committee, put in place by Pelosi after the Senate failed to pass the Jan. 6 Commission, will hold its first hearing Tuesday. The speaker has allowed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., to name just five Republicans on the 12-member committee, and she has the authority to veto selections.

Democrats appear determined to put Trump at the center of their investigation.

Thompson told The Guardian he was interested in speaking to anyone who talked with the then-president on Jan. 6. The chairman especially was interested in learning about a phone call between Trump and McCarthy while the Capitol attack was ongoing.

“There will not be a reluctance on the part of the committee to pursue it,” Thompson said of the call. “The committee will want to know if there is a record of what was said.”

Thompson said he was willing to seek depositions from other members of Congress who might have been involved in the Capitol assault.

“The issues of Jan. 6 are one of the most salient challenges we have as a nation, to make sure that this democracy does not fall prey to people who don’t really identify with democracy,” Thompson said.

Ivanka Trump, the former president’s oldest daughter, and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows could be among people subpoenaed to appear.

“If somebody spoke to the president on Jan. 6, I think it would be important for our committee to know what was said. I can’t imagine you talk about anything else to the president on Jan. 6,” Thompson told The Guardian.

Trump administration officials who refuse to appear before the committee, citing executive privilege, would face subpoenas and lawsuits, Thompson said.

The committee chairman said he expected the committee and senior House investigators to meet with Attorney General Merrick Garland, but insisted his investigation would not overlap with existing criminal probes opened by the justice department and the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.

“We don’t want to get in the way of indictments,” Thompson told The Guardian. “But I think there could be some sharing of information that could be germane to our investigation, just like other committees have negotiated in the past.”

The committee has no deadline by which to submit a report, Thompson said, and warned against any Republican delay tactics.

“Notwithstanding elections next year, we will not stop until our investigation is complete,” Thompson said.
