Vice President Kamala Harris will meet “virtually” with Mexican President President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and other top officials next month — as part of her efforts in dealing with what the administration describes as the “root causes” of the border crisis.

Kamala Harris has yet to visit the southern border as vice president — despite President Biden tapping her to oversee the crisis there.

“On May 7, Vice President Kamala Harris will meet virtually with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who will be joined by Secretary of Foreign Relations Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon and Secretary of Economy Tatiana Clouthier Carrillo,” her office said in a statement.

“This meeting will deepen the partnership between our countries to achieve the common goals of prosperity, good governance, and addressing the root causes of migration.”

Harris has come under fire for not having visited the border since being made the point person for the crisis, and has gone 31 days without holding a press conference on the matter.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is set to meet with Kamala Harris virtually on May 7 to discuss immigration.

The White House has pushed back on that criticism, saying she is in charge of diplomatic talks involved in targeting the root causes of the crisis, not the border itself.

“I have been asked to lead the issue of dealing with root causes in the Northern Triangle, similar to what the then-Vice President did many years ago,” she said at a recent event. “But I will tell you these are issues that aren’t going to be addressed overnight.”

Republicans and other critics have blamed the dramatic liberalization of immigration and border policy by the Biden administration for the surge that has seen more than 172,000 migrants encountered in March along — including record numbers of unaccompanied children that have overwhelmed border facilities and led to images of packed children side-by-side in centers.

Critics have pointed to the rolling back of the “Remain-in-Mexico” policy which kept migrants south of the border, efforts to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants already in the country, and the Biden administration’s decision not to apply Title 42 public health protections — which allows migrants to be expelled quickly — to unaccompanied children.

Kamala Harris will also discuss border issues with Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei.

But the Biden administration, while denying a crisis at the border, has emphasized factors like poverty and climate in Central America.
“We are looking at extensive storm damage because of extreme climate, we’re looking at drought in an area in a region where agriculture is one of the most traditionally important basis for their economy, we’re looking at what’s happening in terms of food scarcity as a result of that and in fact, incredible food insecurity, which we used to call hunger food insecurity,” Harris said at a roundtable this week.“And we are looking at, therefore, a number of issues that also relate to poverty, extreme poverty. And also there’s violence obviously coming out of those regions,” she said. “When you look at the root causes, we’re also looking at issues of corruption. Again, we’re looking at the issue of climate resiliency and then the concern about a lack of economic opportunity.”
Harris will meet on Monday with Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei. She also spoke to Lopez Obrador by phone earlier this month.
In addition, Harris plans to travel in June to the Northern Triangle region of Central America, Fox News has learned. But the precise itinerary for the vice president was unclear. The region includes Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Vice President Kamala Harris will urge global leaders in a virtual speech at the United Nations on Monday to begin preparing now for the next pandemic.

“At the same time that the world works to get through this pandemic, we also know that we must prepare for the next,” Harris will say.

Harris, in her second virtual speech to the global body since becoming vice president, will outline how the Biden administration believes other countries should focus their attention, the news agency reported, citing excerpts of the speech.

Those initiatives include increasing capacity for personal protective equipment, vaccines and test kit manufacturing, improving accessibility to health care, and investing in science, health workers and the well-being of women.

She will say that although the world learned a lot over the past year responding to the COVID-19 crisis, this is not a time to rest easy.

“We have been reminded that the status quo is not nearly good enough, and that innovation is indeed the path forward,” Harris will say.

Ted Cruz mocks VP Kamala Harris saying her ‘GPS got confused’

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz joined New Hampshire Republicans in slamming Vice President Kamala Harris for visiting the Granite State before traveling to the southern border.

“GPS got confused….” the Texas Republican wrote on Twitter of news that Harris was traveling to the northern border state.

“Montreal is going to invade,” Cruz added in a separate tweet.

Sen. Ted Cruz mocked Vice President Kamala Harris when she visited New Hampshire instead of the Southern border.

Both Cruz and Harris have some history in Canada. Cruz, 50, was born in Calgary, where his parents lived before moving to Texas when he was a young child. Harris, 56, spent part of her youth in Montreal while her mother was working at a hospital there.

Harris’ visit to New Hampshire was her first since 2019, when she was still a U.S. senator from California running for president.

The state’s Republicans were quick to call the vice president out for visiting the state — where Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan is expected to face a tough race in 2022 — before she’s traveled to the southern border amid the ongoing immigration crisis

“Welcome to the #WrongBorder, [Vice President Kamala Harris]!” the New Hampshire GOP wrote on Twitter. “As you travel over 2,300 miles away from El Paso, our country would be better served with an official visit to our southern border, not a campaign trip for [Hassan].”

Vice President Kamala Harris drew criticism from GOP leaders as she visited New Hampshire this week instead of the southern border.

Neither Harris nor President Biden — who appointed Harris last month to be the point person in dealing with the growing crisis — have scheduled a trip to the border region. Harris also has not held a news conference to address questions about her new role.

The White House has emphasized that Harris is tasked with addressing the “root causes” of migration.

During a roundtable on the Northern Triangle on Thursday, Harris said the main challenge in dealing with the crisis is “addressing the acute and root causes of migration away from that region, the reasons people flee.”
The vice president said that most of the migrants fleeing to America “don’t want to leave home” and listed reasons as to why people are illegally immigrating to America.“We are looking at extensive storm damage because of extreme climate, we’re looking at drought in an area in a region where agriculture is one of the most traditionally important basis for their economy,” Harris said. “We’re looking at what’s happening in terms of food scarcity as a result of that and in fact, incredible food insecurity, which we used to call hunger, food insecurity.”

Harris has previously spoken with both leaders.

Migrants enter the United States via a raft on the Rio Grande. The recent surge of migrate activity in Central America has challenged border security.

VIDEO: Kamala Harris ripped by New Hampshire GOP for visiting ‘wrong border’

The New Hampshire Republican Party called out Vice President Kamala Harris for visiting the “wrong border” as she heads to the Granite State for a visit.

Harris is visiting New Hampshire for the first time since 2019 when she was still a senator from California running for president.

The state’s Republicans were quick to call the vice president out for visiting the state — where Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan is expected to face a tough race in 2022 — before she’s traveled to the southern border amid the ongoing immigration crisis.

New Hampshire GOP Chairman Stephen Stepanek torched Harris in a statement to Fox News, saying the vice president told her 2020 presidential run supporters in the state that she was “committed to fixing” the situation at the southern border.

“Vice President Kamala Harris would serve our nation better by tackling the crisis at our southern border instead of campaigning with Maggie Hassan near our northern border. Harris last visited our Granite State in 2019, telling supporters that she was committed to fixing the ‘inhumane’ activities towards our country’s southern border,” said Stepanek.

“Now Harris returns almost two years later, but how will she answer to these same individuals, while blatantly ignoring the crisis she’s been specifically charged to handle? Granite Stater’s don’t want another photo-op, they want strong leadership and accountability,” she added.

“Her event in Plymouth is about 100 miles away from our northern border and a staggering 2,355 miles from the worsening crisis in El Paso, Texas.”

The vice president’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment on the New Hampshire GOP’s criticism.

Harris has come under fire recently for not visiting the southern border after being tapped by President Biden to be the point person in dealing with the growing crisis last month.
