The human remains found in a reserve in Florida belong to Brian Laundrie, the fiancé of Gabby Petito.
The FBI said Thursday it used dental records to confirm the remains, found Wednesday in the Carlton Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.
The Laundrie family attorney said the family is aware of the development and offered no comment.
Laundrie had been wanted for questioning in the death of his fiancée.
The couple took a cross-country journey in a van when she disappeared.
Laundrie returned to Florida on Sept. 1 without Gabby.
Her parents reported her missing on Sept. 11. Her remains were found in Wyoming on Sept. 19.
On Wednesday, search teams found the human remains near a backpack and notepad, which belonged to Laundrie.
Bertolino added Laundrie’s father Chris is the one who initially found the bag.
Chris Laundrie found the dry bag in some bramble. Bertolino said Mr. Laundrie wanted law enforcement to see it, but didn’t want to leave it with a news reporter standing by so he picked it up and met with law enforcement. The human remains were found nearby.
